Sarajevo Honorary Heart — the roll of honour.

The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo has been given since 2005 to the people who built the festival and the cinema of the region — and, since 2016, to the greats of world film. Every recipient, one page each, year by year.

This is the complete roll of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo — the honorary award of the Sarajevo Film Festival, given each August at the closing ceremony in the National Theatre. It is not the same as the competitive Heart of Sarajevo (the festival's top prize for film); this one honours the people, not the films.

Read it as two lists. The first is the builders — the festival directors, the fund heads, the diplomats, the producers who made the festival and the region's cinema exist (Marco Müller, Dieter Kosslick, Cat Villiers, Gavrilo Grahovac, Emil Tedeschi, Roberto Olla, Nijaz Hastor, Agnès B. herself). The second is the stars the festival has since been able to call its own — Freeman, Jolie, De Niro, Wenders, Dafoe. The award started with the first list. The second list is what the first one earned.

One note for the record: since the award's 2016 turn toward lifetime achievement, three Bosnian names appear — Gavrilo Grahovac (2006), Danis Tanović (2014), and Emir Hadžihafizbegović (2026).

The Heart of Sarajevo award laid out with the other prizes at the closing of the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, 2024.

The award itself

A silver heart, made in Sarajevo.

The Honorary Heart is not minted, and it is not a flat plaque. It is a heart cast in silver, hand-made every year since 2004 by the Sofić goldsmith workshop in Sarajevo — the brothers Sead and Senad Sofić — working from the original sketch of the French designer Agnès B. She created the shape in the war years: at peace protests in Paris she cut hearts out of cardboard, sold them, and sent the money to the besieged city. The cardboard heart of 1993 became the silver trophy of 2004.

Each heart takes about ten days to make, assembled from two silver parts by four craftspeople. By the workshop's own count it had cast roughly two hundred of them by 2022. When a recipient holds it up at the National Theatre, they are holding the work of a Sarajevo workshop, not an order from abroad.
