Oliver Stone received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2017, at the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as John Cleese. He is the American director of Platoon (1986) — for which he served in Vietnam and won the Best Director Oscar — JFK (1991), Nixon (1995) and Snowden (2016).
His films have spent forty years asking hard questions about power, war and official story, which is a reasonable description of what a festival founded during a siege tends to programme. The pairing with Cleese in one year gave the ceremony both its deepest political edge and its biggest laugh.
