Manfred Schmidt received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2009, at the 15th Sarajevo Film Festival. He was the executive director of Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), the regional film fund for the central German states.
The 2009 award shows, as clearly as any year, what the Honorary Heart was for in its first decade: the fund managers and festival directors who kept money and programmes flowing into the region’s cinema. Without the MDM-class institutions behind him, much of the festival’s regional programming in those years would not have existed.
