Stephen Frears received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2016, at the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same year as Robert De Niro and the diplomat Wolfgang Amadeus Brülhart. He is the British director of My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), The Queen (2006) and Philomena (2013).
The 2016 class shows the award’s full spectrum in one year: a lifetime-achievement legend, a working international director, and one of the festival’s quiet supporters. Frears sits in the middle of that year as the professional who has simply kept making serious films for forty years.
