Elia Suleiman received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2024, at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Payne, Ryan and Turturro. He is the Palestinian director of Divine Intervention (2002) — winner of the Cannes Jury Prize — The Time That Remains (2009) and It Must Be Heaven (2019).
Suleiman’s cinema — deadpan, nearly wordless, built from absurdist tableaux of life under occupation — has made him a festival-circuit favourite for three decades. A festival born in a siege giving its Heart to a filmmaker of a city under siege carried a clear message.
Also honoured in 2024
- Alexander Payne Film director and screenwriter
- Christof Papousek Co-owner, Constantin Film-Holding; managing partner, Cineplexx International
- John Turturro Actor and director
- Meg Ryan Actress and director
