Lynne Ramsay received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2023, at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival, completing the class with Cousins and Kaufman. She is the Scottish director of Ratcatcher (1999), Morvern Callar (2002), We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and You Were Never Really Here (2017).
A director of intense, near-wordless cinema about children, violence and grief, she has made fewer films than almost any peer of her standing — each one taking years and arriving fully formed. The festival’s choice of Ramsay was a tribute to quality over volume, a value Sarajevo’s own film culture understands well.
Also honoured in 2023
- Charlie Kaufman Screenwriter and film director
- Mark Cousins Filmmaker, critic and film historian
