Béla Tarr received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2013, at the 19th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Roberto Olla. He is the Hungarian director of Sátántangó (1994) — a seven-and-a-half-hour film of eleven takes over two days in its fictional calendar — Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) and The Turin Horse (2011).

He had announced The Turin Horse as his last feature, a decision he has held to since; he now runs a film school rather than making films. The festival honoured him two years after that farewell, for the body of work rather than a current one.

Also honoured in 2013

What they said in Sarajevo

This is the first award I received not for the films I've made, but for what I do now.
