Charlie Kaufman received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2023, at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Mark Cousins and Lynne Ramsay. He wrote Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), and directed Synecdoche, New York (2008) and the animated Anomalisa (2015).
The most original screenwriter of his American generation, he built a career on stories about identity, memory and consciousness that most studios would not have touched. His award was a festival standing up for the screenwriter as a first-class film artist.
