Lifetime achievement — the first award of its kind at the festival.

Robert De Niro received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2016, at the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival — and not just any Honorary Heart. He was the first recipient of the newly created lifetime-achievement variant, the moment the award acquired its second, heavier meaning.

He needs little introduction: the American actor of Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and a dozen other landmarks of postwar cinema, and co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which itself emerged as a response to a city’s wound — New York after 2001 — in a way Sarajevo’s audience understood.

From 2016 the roll changes register. The builders and patrons never stopped appearing, but the lifetime-achievement award added a parallel list of the world’s great film artists, and De Niro’s name opened it.

What they said in Sarajevo

I was impressed by the beauty of the city, and I think it's a shame that such a city could be attacked.
