Branko Lustig received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2012, at the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival. He was the Croatian-born producer who won Oscars for Schindler’s List (1993) and Gladiator (2000), and he carried a history few producers carry: he was a survivor of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, deported as a child.

His life connects to the story of this region and of Bosnia’s Jews at several points — he produced films about the Holocaust and about the region, and the memory he carried made him a particular figure at a festival whose own city had been besieged. He died in 2019.

What they said in Sarajevo

There are fewer and fewer films about the Holocaust. I feel that films about Jewish suffering will stop being made when I die.
