Jesse Eisenberg received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2022, at the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival. He is the American actor of The Social Network (2010), a writer of plays including The Spoils, and — from 2022 — a feature director.

The award landed in the same week as a natural centrepiece: the festival gave him the Heart and then screened his directing debut, When You Finish Saving the World, at the open-air cinema. He has since gone on to write and direct A Real Pain (2024), which earned him an Oscar nomination — the region’s own modest pride, since the film was made partly in Poland and draws on his family’s Polish-Jewish history, the same line of memory that runs through Bosnia’s own Jewish story.

Also honoured in 2022

Bosnia is half the size of the New Jersey I grew up in, yet it produces incredible films — it has become part of Europe's film tradition.
