For his contribution to the art of cinema.

Paul Schrader received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2022, at the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Eisenberg, Loznitsa and Östlund. He wrote Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) for Martin Scorsese, directed American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and, in his seventies, produced a late-career renaissance with First Reformed (2017) and Master Gardener (2022).

He is one of the great chroniclers of the isolated, tormented man — a register Sarajevo’s audiences, who know a thing or two about isolation, have always recognised.

Also honoured in 2022
