Alejandro González Iñárritu received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2019, at the 25th Sarajevo Film Festival, in a class of four that also included Isabelle Huppert, Paweł Pawlikowski and Tim Roth. He is the Mexican director of Amores Perros (2000), Birdman (2014) and The Revenant (2015) — the back-to-back Best Director Oscars of 2015 and 2016 are a rare feat in recent Academy history.

He arrived as one of the most decorated working directors of his generation. The 2019 class was the festival’s twenty-fifth-year statement: four international names at the top of world film, given together.
