Wolfgang Amadeus Brülhart received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2016, at the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Robert De Niro and Stephen Frears. He was the Swiss diplomat — deputy chief of mission and cultural counsellor at the Swiss embassy in Sarajevo — who helped keep the festival and Bosnia’s cultural scene connected to the outside world in the post-war years.
His name, next to De Niro’s, is the strongest possible illustration of what the award’s builders list looks like. Switzerland, through people like Brülhart, was one of the countries that quietly supported Bosnian cultural reconstruction after the war; the festival returned the favour with a Heart.
