Mark Cousins received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2023, at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival, in a three-name class with Charlie Kaufman and Lynne Ramsay. He is the Northern Irish filmmaker and critic whose fifteen-hour documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey (2011) is one of the most ambitious histories of cinema ever made, told with an outsider’s eye for the films the mainstream canon leaves out.
Cousins is the rare honouree honoured for writing about cinema rather than strictly making it — a fitting choice for a festival that has always cared about film culture in the widest sense.
