Sergei Loznitsa received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2022, at the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as Jesse Eisenberg, Ruben Östlund and Paul Schrader. He is the Ukrainian director of My Joy (2010) and Donbass (2018), and one of the leading documentarians of the Soviet and post-Soviet experience.

The 2022 award carried a weight the festival could not ignore: it came months after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and a city that had itself been besieged gave its Heart to a Ukrainian filmmaker making films about that exact history. It was the roll’s most directly political moment of that decade.
