Jafar Panahi received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2011, at the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival. He is the Iranian director of The White Balloon (1995), The Circle (2000) and Offside (2006), one of the leading voices of Iranian cinema.
The award arrived in one of the strangest years of his life. In 2010 an Iranian court had sentenced him to six years of filmmaking and travel bans for his work and his politics. He could not travel to Sarajevo to collect the Heart. The festival honoured him anyway — a small signal that the regional festival network would keep his name in the light while his own state was trying to darken it.
