Nuri Bilge Ceylan received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2018, at the 24th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as the Bosnian businessman Nijaz Hastor. He is the Turkish director of Uzak (2002), Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) and Winter Sleep (2014), which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Ceylan is the Turkish cinema of his generation in miniature — austere, patient, full of landscapes and long silences. A festival from the former Ottoman world honouring him is a natural fit; Turkish and Bosnian audiences have watched each other’s cinema closely for decades.

Also honoured in 2018

  • Nijaz Hastor Founder, ASA Prevent Group; founder, Hastor Foundation

What they said in Sarajevo

A director should never be sure of anything. He should be suspicious all the time; he should be afraid.
