Mike Leigh received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2006, at the 12th Sarajevo Film Festival, in the same class as the Bosnian former minister Gavrilo Grahovac. He is the British director of Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996) and Mr. Turner (2014), working in the collaborative improvisation method he has spent five decades refining.
The pairing with Grahovac is a fair sample of the award’s first decade: one famous director, one regional builder, in the same year. Leigh’s name was among the first purely artistic ones on a roll that had opened with festival infrastructure.
