Alexander Payne received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2024, at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, in a four-name class with Meg Ryan, Elia Suleiman and John Turturro. He is the American director of Sideways (2004), The Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013) and The Holdovers (2023).
The 30th-edition class was the festival’s biggest of the decade, marking thirty years since its 1995 founding in a besieged city. Payne — an Oscar-winning writer-director of warm, melancholic, small-scale stories — was a natural centrepiece for a birthday edition.

- Elia Suleiman Film director and writer
- John Turturro Actor and director
- Meg Ryan Actress and director
