Angelina Jolie received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo in 2011, at the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival, in a year that also honoured Jafar Panahi and Emil Tedeschi. She is the American actress of Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Lara Croft fame who turned director.

The Sarajevo connection runs deeper than the award. The same year she was honoured, she was in the region making her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) — a love story set against the Bosnian war, filmed in Bosnia and told in Bosnian. Sarajevo’s festival gave her the Heart as she was giving the city her first film.
