A perfect day in Sarajevo
One day, no rush. Coffee, history, mountain, river, dinner. In that order.
If you have exactly one day, here is how we would spend it.
8:00 — Burek for breakfast
Start at Buregdžinica Sač or Bosna in Baščaršija. Order one portion of burek with meat, one of sirnica (cheese), and a glass of cold yoghurt. Sit at a tiny table. Watch the bazaar wake up.
9:30 — Walk the bazaar
Wander Baščaršija while it is still quiet. Sebilj, Kazandžiluk, the courtyard of Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque. Buy nothing yet.
11:00 — Coffee at Morića Han
A proper bosanska kafa at Morića Han, the 1551 caravanserai. Take an hour. This is not optional.
12:30 — Up to Žuta Tabija
Climb the cobbles to the Yellow Fortress. Catch your breath. Look at the city.
13:30 — Ćevapi lunch
Back down to Željo. Order ten with onion and somun. Order an ayran. You will be full enough to nap.
15:00 — The cable car to Trebević
Walk along the river to Bistrik. Take the cable car up. Spend the afternoon walking the bobsled track on Trebević, or just sit on a bench.
17:30 — Sunset at the top
Stay for golden hour. The city below will turn from copper to gold to dark.
19:00 — Back down
Cable car at twilight. Walk along the Miljacka. Cross the Latin Bridge. Pause.
20:00 — Dinner at Inat Kuća
Old Bosnian recipes, river views, the place where they refused to move when the Austrians built the City Hall opposite. Order dolma and a glass of plum brandy. Reservations wise. The story is on the Inat Kuća page.
22:00 — A nightcap
Walk to Zlatna Ribica for one šljivovica in the most theatrical small room in the city. Or Kafana Sevdah Art House for sevdah music. Either is correct.
Sleep well. Dream slowly. Come back.
